2CL supplied the two-way radio communications infrastructure for the Glasgow 2018 European Championships, providing over 2,300 digital radios across twelve venues and festival sites.
The championships, held from 2 to 12 August 2018, saw more than 3,000 athletes compete across six sports — making it one of the most operationally complex multi-venue events 2CL had supported to that date.
The contract, awarded in February 2018, covered the supply, configuration, and on-site support of Motorola Solutions DP1400 and DP4400 digital radios and accessories. The scope varied significantly by venue. Smaller sites including Knightswood Park (BMX), the Royal Commonwealth Pool (Diving), and Scotstoun Sports Campus (Swimming) operated on digital simplex channels, with up to 16 channels per site. More complex venues required dedicated infrastructure: MOTOTRBO Capacity Plus systems were deployed at Strathclyde Country Park (Rowing and Triathlon) and the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome (Track Cycling).
“It was an honour to provide the radio communications for the inaugural Glasgow 2018 European Championships. This was our first multi-venue, multi-sport championships, and I am proud of every member of the team involved.”
Garrick Gregory, CEO, 2CL
The most technically demanding element was the road cycling. A MOTOTRBO Linked Capacity Plus system was required to maintain radio coverage across the 45km time trial course, which ran from the Riverside Museum through Strathblane and Lennoxtown before finishing at Glasgow Green.
Throughout the championships, two dedicated roaming support teams — each of four 2CL engineers, available 24 hours a day — were on call across all sites. A further support team at 2CL’s Hampshire headquarters provided backup for last-minute changes and client requests. The project was completed on time and within budget.
